After renovations, The Rusted Farmhouse looked bright, clean, and beautiful. Simple and plain. Bare and naked. It didn’t help that there were no sidewalks and the grass went all the way to the house. I always knew I wanted shutters. It was fairly simple to order them and have them installed. I couldn’t wait to give someone directions to my house: Its the white house with black shutters But window boxes were also on my mind.
I called in the carpenter since this is a DIBuy and not a DIY project. This is something hand crafted, based on my idea, just not by me. (must make category for this…) I scoured the internet for samples. I pretty much knew they would be black, and in a classic style. There is so much inspiration out there, I just showed the carpenter my idea, and he went to work! They were constructed of cedar. When he was done with the three I wanted, there was extra material, so I added a fourth 😉
Of course, it was my job to stain the boxes…Black was the only choice!
Once installed, I wasn’t sure how to handle the inside. This internet search was not as fun. I decided on lining the boxes with two layers of heavy duty garbage bags. I drilled several drainage holes.
I then used styrofoam filler leftover from packing. It was lightweight, and I figured it would be fine with drainage. I then topped it with potting mix and planted the boxes.
I had some fun with the seasons last year.
The impatiens did really well on the front and east side of the house!
More white in front next time!!
I am excited to try new things!!
I was late to the party for fall last year. I hope to get some mums in to mix it up a bit next time around.
My kitchen window box is pretty huge!!
I found this honeysuckle vine on the trail where I run.
I went back with bucket and shears and grabbed some up for my boxes
Winter was the easiest and least expensive Season to decorate. The greens and berries were all on our property. I added in some pine cones and stars that I had in a few different materials.
This Spring I planted pansies and tulips. It was such a nice treat. Especially, since it felt like it took forever for Summer to arrive!!
We had a special visit from some Orioles this Spring. They enjoyed the tulips as much as I did
Don’t forget to follow me on IG and see what I come up with for September 😉
